When taking content from the workshop, you'll probably notice your .zip easily reaching sizes over 50MB and a lot of that has to do with how large the textures are. A lot of workshop content creators use .vtf's that are 4k resolution for both the diffuse and normal map, easily making one material 12 MB. 1. Open VTFEdit, then click on the page 'import' button underneath File. 2. Click on the file type in the bottom right (above open and cancel) and change it to All Files (*.*) 3. Locate the folder where you are storing the materials, whatever folder you plan on archiving as an .zip. Now locate any file >= 5,000 KB, sometimes you want to keep all your files close to 1,366 KB. Open the file. 4. It may take a second to load, then a menu will appear. Focus only on the (Clamp) Section, changing both the Maximum Width and Maximum Height to 1024. Now hit 'OK'. 5. You will now see the same window where you originally hit 'import'. Click on File > Save As... and save over the same material you originally imported. Repeat the step for every large file. Your materials are now downsized and you should have probably lost several MBs for the entire .zip size. Use the most updated version of VTFEdit v1.3.3 and preferably do the installer. Some people have had bugs where file sizes didn't change for some reason when saving but the issue resolved itself when they updated the application.

the first time i used vtfedit, it worked. i ended up uninstalling it because i stopped playing gmod altogether and uninstalled everything associated, but after reinstalling it, vtfedit is not my friend. i'll recover the error and post it here eventually, though.
